Revolution and the Search for Order
France 1789-1870

Understanding how to listen to lectures will be crucial for your success in many of courses you take at I.U. To get the most out of this means of teaching, you will need to listen actively and to identify what is most relevant and worth remembering in each lecture.

To give you a little experience at this, I have recorded a short lecture on how French conservatives in the late 19th century viewed the political history of their nation since the French Revolution began in 1789. Some of this material could be directly useful in developing a thesis in the paper you are writing about Gérôme's rejecton of new tendencies in art; some is not. Your task will be to identify the relevant material in the lecture and decide how this conservative view of French history might have influenced Gérôme's attitudes.
