Day 4 -- A World of Leisure

Today there will not be a team presentation of the sort that we have been doing.

Instead of responding to an existing question,  your  team will be working to create a new question, around which a paper could be constructed and assembling some materials that we could use in creating a paper on the experience of new forms of leisure in late 19th century France.

To achieve this you should do the following:

1. Divide up the materials on the web site and carefully read those assigned to you

2. Write individual research reports in which you describe issues in the source that might be worth considering when coming up with a question for the hypothetical paper.

2. Go through these materials looking for:

  • Trends, ideas, issues, etc. that you might want to include in the paper
  • Particularly interesting examples, images, or ideas that we might include in the paper

3. Think about issues we dealt with earlier in the week to see if there is anything that you might want to include.

Brainstorm with your team about what you have found and consider some patterns that might be interesting to explore.

4. With your team consider material from each of the earlier days of the course that might be relevant to creating a paper.

Produce the following to share with the class:

  • The question around which you would be structuring the hypothetical paper

  • The smaller questions that you posed to reach a thesis

  • The tentative hypothesis that you would be presenting

  • A survey of the kinds of evidence that you would be using to support this hypothesis
