Eating during the Siege

As the siege continued, food became increasingly difficult to acquire. It was in these months that horse meat became a part of the Parisian diet. [Signs of its continued presence are visible in the horse heads that are still present above many butcher shops in Paris.] When the horses were exhausted, more exotic foods were consumed, including animals from the Paris zoo and even dogs, cats, and rats.
